About This Item
ONE OF A MAXIMUM OF 140 COPIES THUS - LOVELY COPY IN ITS ORIGINAL BOARDS
first editions, joint reissue small 8vo. [2 (half title)], viii, 9-59, [1 (printer's device &c.)]; [4 (blank)], (iii)-viii, 51, [1 (printer's device &c.)], [2 (reviews)], [6 (Elkin Mathews advts.)], [2 (blank)]pp., original brown boards, front cover and spine gilt lettered, edges untrimmed, most of front free-endpaper excised (possibly as sold), couple of pinhole worm holes at lower margin of first few leaves, spine just a shade faded and with a few light and trivial marks, else a fine fresh copy and virtually as new. Rare in this condition.
Gallup Bibliography Pound, 3b-4b. Both first editions, second issue. One of a maximum of 140 copies.
Personae and Exultations had first been issued by Elkin Mathews in April and October 1909 respectively. This joint reissue of "not more than 500 copies ... consists of the first-edition sheets of the two books with their original title-leaves excised ... and new half-title leaf for the volume .. inserted at the front. Of this new preliminary matter, 500 copies were printed by the Chiswick Press. The rare occurrence of the composite volume in comparison with its separate components indicates that fewer than the intended number were actually issued" [Gallup].
Nelson's work in the publisher's archives showed that a maximum of 140 copies could have been issued in this form (vide p. 148).
