first edition (apparently bound from the parts) tall 8vo. xiv, [2 (errata leaf)], 624pp., 40 etched plates including additional engraved title page, contemporary half tan calf, smooth spine gilt decorated and with a dark maroon title label gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled sides, tiny pale mark at extreme head of spine, marbled sides a little rubbed, plates foxed as usual (some heavily), else very good.
An early issue with all first issue errors apart from ''screamed'' for ''screwed'' on page 132 (present in earliest copies only): Chapter XXVII on page 282 and not page 283 as listed on the contents page; p. 16, line 1 and p. 225, line 22 - ''recal'' instead of ''recall''; p. 19, 12 lines from the bottom - ''cha pter ;ut''; p. 387, 6 lines from the bottom - ''coroboration'' instead of ''corroboration''; p. 472, 13 lines from the bottom - no closing of the quotation marks; ''1850'' under the publishers' imprint on the engraved title-page
