Illustrated by F. V. du Mond. London: Chatto and Windus, 1896. First British edition. 435 pp. 8vo., half red morocco with gilt spine, red cloth boards with gilt initials, t.e.g. Joints and corners worn, some dampstaining to spine and rear cover cloth, not affecting interior. Hinges starting. Owner's bookplate (removed) has left offset tanning to front endpapers. A few pages roughly opened, not affecting text; parts unopened. Nicely printed on laid paper. B/w frontispiece and plates. Published in the same year as the U.S. edition (see BAL 3446).

Synopsis

Mark Twain's work on Joan of Arc is titled in full Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte who is identified further as Joan's page and secretary. The work is fictionally presented as a translation from the manuscript by Jean Francois Alden, or, in the words of the published book, "Freely Translated out of the Ancient French into Modern English from the Original Unpublished Manuscript in the National Archives of France".
