Peter Churchmouse was very hungry and began gnawing holes in hymn books. He was so very very hungry that Parson Pease-Porridge thought he was a rat and for protection against the marauder got himself a cat that is, he thought Gabriel was a cat, but he was quite mistaken. Gabriel was a soft round ball of a kitten. He and Peter met in no time at all. And when Peter found that Gabriel was only a kitten- not to be confused with the cat family- and Gabriel discovered that Peter was not a rat, but a very sociable and hungry church mouse, their companionship was sealed. .
