About This Item
1742 Phaedrus & Aesop Fables Greek Literature Stoic Philosophy Avienius Mascrier
"Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden."
– Phaedrus
Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop's famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus's treatment of the moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did.
This 1742 edition of Phaedrus and Aesop was collected and edited with notes by Jean Baptiste le Mascrier who included poetry of 4th-century poet Avienius as well as a 'life of Phaedrus' at the beginning.
