First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. [First American Edition of the first London pharmacopoeia] Bound in modern leather. New leather spine labels. Gilt to spine. Text printed in two columns. Collation: [24], 305, [33 (of 35)] pages. Lacking leaf Y7 of the Table of Compounds. Some browning, foxing. Minor marginal chips to title page. "This 1720 Boston edition of Culpeper's Pharmacopoeia Londinensis enjoys the triple distinction of being the first herbal, the first pharmacopoeia, and the first full-length medical book published in the American colonies." Norman 542; Evans 2114; Austin 591; Garrison-Morton 1828.2. Culpeper's an English work originally published in 1653. 1759 signature and inscription of Oliver Powers at rear end page. Presumed to be Oliver Powers (1741 - 1818), based on the birth date written on the note from when Oliver was 18 years old. Powers was born Sep 1741 in Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay to Jonathan Powers. He served in the French and Indian (under Col. Williard) and Revolutionary Wars (in the Lexington Alarm Roll of Capt. Samuel Sawyer's Co., Col. John Whitcomb's regiment.).
