About This Item

New York: Coward-McCann, Inc.,, 1940. The screwball that saved Hepburn's career First edition, first printing. Barry wrote the play as a comeback vehicle for Katharine Hepburn, who had been infamously labelled "box office poison" the previous year. She starred as the socialite Tracy Lord in the original 1939 production and in the 1940 film adaptation; for the latter, she was nominated for an Academy Award. Hepburn later said of Tracy, "I gave her life, and she gave me back my career". Hepburn starred in the film alongside Cary Grant and James Stewart. The play was adapted again in 1956 into the musical comedy film High Society, starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in white, top edge green. With dust jacket. Hint of rubbing to spine ends; jacket bright and unclipped, spine toned, extremities lightly nicked and creased: a fine copy in near-fine dust jacket.
