Three issues of Elbert Hubbard’s avant garde monthly publication "The Philistine" containing numerous informative and perceptive articles to include: A lengthy dissertation on the differences between the Shaker and Oneida communities; Commentary on an article in the North American Review by ex-governor D.H. Chamberlain of South Carolina, written from his deathbed, regarding his views of the implausibility of an afterlife; A lengthy homage to private business, which Hubbard considers a divine calling superior to religion; An article on the genius of Thomas Paine; An incisive piece on the predatory nature of women; A scathing Hubbard condemnation of an article by Edward Bok in the Ladies’ Home Journal alleging widespread damage to women and babies in the United States from uncontrolled venereal disease; and A lengthy treatise on good health and the inverse relationship it bears with the practices of the established medical profession. Fine. All issues in pristine condition.
