Establishment of Naval supply bases in Chile, Peru and Ecuador opened the US West Coast and Pacific islands to greater protection by the US Navy in the critical early 1840's Limited Edition of 1000 copies.84 pp, illus. A beautiful limited edition facsimile reprint of Philo White's handwritten manuscript, published in full for the first time. It includes a dramatic account of the impetuous capture of Monterey from Mexico by Commodore Thomas Catesby Jones, intended to be beginning of the conquest of California, though premature by a decade. A clean and fresh copy of this engaging account, Five full page illustrations (two in color) from an 1842 account by William Myers, including early drawings of Yerba Buena island in San Francisco Bay and some of its earliest buildings. VG+ condition.
