About This Item
Dublin: John Exshaw and William Halhead, 1779. Third edition. Hardcover. Good + to very good condition.. Octavo. 4 volumes. Text in English. With an 85 page detailed index at rear of Volume IV. Contemporary polished calf with red & black spine labels. Illustrated with a copper engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and 4 copper engraved folding maps (the East Indies, South America & Africa, the West Indies, and North America). Outer hinges cracked but cords still holding nicely. Extremities of spines chipped. Covers quite rubbed and their edges chipped, but contents are clean and unmarked.
Note: This work also appeared in numerous editions and several different multi-volume formats. It is the translation of: "Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes." Although the title implies a limitation in scope to European colonies in the East and West Indies, the volumes include European colonies and colonization in America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
Much of this work is said to have been written by Diderot, and it was one of the books that most influenced the French Revolution. In France it was condemned by the French Parliament and Raynal was forced to flee the country.
