New York:: Charles L. Webster & Company,, 1887.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine bright copy (previous owner name on flyleaf) in green cloth binding with the Army of the Potomac Society emblem in gilt and red on the front board. General George Brinton McClellan is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. He was beloved by the soldiers of the Army of the Potomac, insubordinate to his commander in chief, a master at preparing for war but cautious about engaging, Criticized throughout the remainder of his life, he never publicly defended his actions as commander of the Union army. Here, however, his posthumously-published memoir provides his answers to the critics.Using a combination of military documents, his own field records, and letters to his beloved wife Nelly, McClellan does not attempt a full autobiography but instead focuses on his short time as general in chief of the army.

Description:
1874 1ed Confederate General Joseph E Johnston Civil War Narrative CSA Military
Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general, even though he trained at West Point. However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.

'In Tall Cotton' says of this work:
"A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess."

According to Nevins, this work is
"one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone."

Description:
1878 1st ed Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston Civil War TEXAS CSA

Albert Sidney Johnston was an American military general known for his roles in the Mexican American War and most notably the American Civil War. According to President Jefferson Davis, Johnston was the 'finest general officer in the Confederacy' before Robert E. Lee; Davis continued 'without doing injustice to the living, it may safely be said that our loss is irreparable." Interestingly, he was the highest-ranking officer to be killed in action during the entirety of the Civil War.

In 1878, a life of Johnston was published, outlining the major events in the general's life. According to Eicher, this work
"highlights Johnston's early life, career in the Black Hawk War, days at Jefferson Barracks, the Texas Revolution, the Mexican War years, and his role in the Mormon Rebellion. The work attacks Grant and Confederates in dispute with Johnston. It remains valuable for its discussion of the general's antebellum life and for… Read More

Description:
1863 Southern Rebellion CIVIL WAR Confederate SLAVERY Battles Maps Dred Scott 2v
"The Southern Rebellion" by William Augustus Crafts is a comprehensive account of the political and military history of the United States focusing on the onset of President Buchanan's administration through the Civil War. Drawing upon official documents and authentic sources, the book traces the deep-seated roots of the rebellion, highlighting the long-standing determination of some factions to establish a Southern Confederacy, a goal rooted largely in protecting the socio-economic interests of the Southern aristocracy which was grounded in slavery.
While charting key political discourses and military events, including notable battles such as the bombardment on Fort Sumter and policies like the Dred Scott decision, the work underscores the complex dynamics between the North and the South, chronicling how tensions over slavery and state rights escalated over years, finally culminating in the Civil War. Profusely… Read More
