Osborn Oldroyd (1842-1930) was one of the great collectors and early researchers on Lincoln and lived in Lincoln's Springfield home for several years in the 1880s. He accumulated thousands of items related to the president, many of which are at the Ford's Theater Lincoln Museum today. As part of this account Oldroyd describes personally retracing the route of John Wilkes Booth's flight, with a folding map of the route laid in. 82 illustrations including photographs from Oldroyd's collections, with an introduction by Thomas Maley Harris, a Union general who was on the commission to try the Lincoln conspirators and also authored books on the assassination. Includes preface, detailed table of contents for the 800 planned pages, introduction, sample pages from 5 chapters, index, 14 steel portraits, 7 pages of positive reviews and a double page prospectus of the work. Bound in are order forms listing name, residence and style of binding with 36 subscribers listed. Wonderful source for publishing history and local history, subscription publishing was popular in the USA after the Civil War; canvassers were often women recruited by newspaper advertisements. Spotting throughout, pencil mark to cover, cloth spine covering coming off, pen mark on blank order form, shows all signs of being a working book.

However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.

1878 1st ed Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston Civil War TEXAS CSA

Albert Sidney Johnston was an American military general known for his roles in the Mexican American War and most notably the American Civil War. According to President Jefferson Davis, Johnston was the 'finest general officer in the Confederacy' before Robert E. Lee; Davis continued 'without doing injustice to the living, it may safely be said that our loss is irreparable." Interestingly, he was the highest-ranking officer to be killed in action during the entirety of the Civil War.

In 1878, a life of Johnston was published, outlining the major events in the general's life. According to Eicher, this work
