About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. The story of a mischievous monkey, set in the Bunker Hill district of downtown Los Angeles and colorfully illustrated by the author. Born in Fresno, California, Leo Politi (1908-96) spent his developmental years studying art at the Institute of Monza in Milan, Italy. Returning to California in 1928, he settled near Olvera Street in Los Angeles and began writing and drawing in earnest, winning a Caldecott Award for his Song of the Swallows (1949). This copy is inscribed by Politi on the front flyleaf. Quarto. Original blue cloth binding, with pictorial dark blue stamping. Internally crisp and clean. The dust jacket is price-clipped, with a very faint label shadow and just a hint of edgewear. Better than very good.
