Worcester: Dorr, Howland & Co., 1895. Early days in Gibson County, IN, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, factual data, and the biographies of numerous early residents, in this 160 page booklet, comprised of excerpts from the rare 1895 book: The Pictorial Story of America by Elia W. Peattie, and other sources. The spiral bound booklet is 8 1/2 x 5 1/2" and is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. Note: Although the booklet is new, the source book had some words underlined in ink. Where these could not be removed without endangering the print, they have been left intact, and will appear on the reprints. Past and present communities in this southwest Indiana county include: Barton Township, Buckskin, Center Township, Columbia Township, Fort Branch, Francisco, Haubstadt, Hazleton, Johnson Township, Mackey, Montgomery Township, Oakland City, Owensville, Patoka, Princeton (County Seat), Somerville, Union Township, Wabash Township, Washington Township, and White River Township. (Some may not be mentioned in the booklet.) Topics covered in the first part of the booklet are: John Severns Sr. and other early settlers, the organization of Gibson County; Bench and Bar; Public Improvements and Finances; Doctors in the county; Schools; Towns; Members of the Legislature; Sheriffs and other county and township officers. Most of the booklet is devoted to biographies of prominent citizens.
