Chicago: S. C. Griggs & Company, 1888. Third Edition. HB. Brown pebbled cloth, black lettering and designs on front cover, gilt lettering on spine, 12 mo., 270 pp. Signed by the author on title page. With tipped in letter signed by the author, and dated June 22, 1864, addressed to Theo. F. Dwight. Author was the correspondent for the Chicago Evening Journal, and covered the Civil War for the paper. This book is a compilation of his articles, two of which are about the invasion of the North by Jubal Early in June & July 1864 when Early approached Washington, the period during which the letter tipped in was written. Covers show minor edge wear, previous owner has taped a short bibliography of the author's books and biographical information to the front paste-down. Also tipped in is a visitor card signed by the author's wife. No marks in book, hinges cracking but binding solid. Covers clean with very minor edge wear. Book condition VG.
