About This Item

Eastsound, Washington: Orcas Publishing Company, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Bill Holm. Stout 8vo. Pp. 362. Illustrated with many black-and-white photos. Contains a short glossary of Chinook words. Bibliography. Index. Endpaper maps. Bound in full cloth with lettering stamped in red on spine. Fine in a price-clipped dust jacket that shows some fading to front panel and spine. Signed by the author on the front free-endpaper. A solid, presentable copy of this final word on the 1859 battle between British and US forces on San Juan Island, as well as historical and natural history of all islands in the San Juan Islands archipelago, including Spieden Island, Sinclair Island, Guemes Island, Waldron Island, etc.

Contains a chapter on early smugglers who were enriched by importing both opium and Chinese nationals across the porous border from Canada. (Canada not only imposed no duty on opium, but permitted Vancouver and Victoria opium factories to produce high volumes of the narcotic.)

The author was a third-generation islander who was raised on San Juan Island and moved to Orcas Island to raise his family. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable clear, archival sleeve.
