London: Hunt and Clarke, 1828 First English Edition. lxxvi,472,(1); 545 pp. Two volumes. Octavo (22.5 X 14.5 cm.) Original blue paper covered boards. Brown paper spines. New paper spine labels. Untrimmed. Board edges quite worn. Contemporary signature on front paste down. Mounted frontispiece of the author in volume one. Two folding plans. Three plates and a large folding map. Minor foxing scattered in each volume. Overall a very attractive copy. Field 111; Howes B338 ("aa"); Sabin 4605; Wagner-Camp 26a:2. Most of volume 2 covers the author's year in America, during which he traveled from the Eastern seaboard to the Mississippi via the Ohio valley. then up the river to its tributaries in what is now Minnesota. Finally down the river to New Orleans. He undertook a dangerous and lonely journey in his search for the sources of the Mississippi and other rivers in which he claimed a successful exploration. Much of the second volume appeared separately in French under the title La decouverte des sources du Mississippi et de la rivière Sanglante.</p><p></p><p>Authors Presentation copy inscribed to Miss Dalyrymple. Very scarce in the original boards and more so with the presentation inscription. 1828
