London: John Miller, 1824. Octavo. 3 volume set. 2nd edition published the same year as the first edition. [see BAL 3831). Half-titles, 268, 342 and 303pp. John Miller, the publisher, had been working since 1817 on reprinting first editions of American novels. Issued as a triple decker, here in the original boards. This was the first of Cooper's three nautical tales is set during the time of the American Revolution. Katherine Plowden is an example of cross-dressing so she can rendevous with her fiancee, Richard Barnstable. A handsome set bound in brown paper over bue paper covered baords, paper spine labels and shelf sticker. From the library of George Vincent Mullen, (1872-1931), Justice State Supreme Court with his bookplate and bookpalte of R.J. LL.(Lloyd) Price (1843 - 1923), who was a sportsman and author. Books show minor wear which is quite unusual for original boards. Upper joint to volume three does have a surface crack but not broken through. Very good.
