San Antonio: Clegg Company, 1947. Very good.. Photographically-illustrated poster, 28 x 29 inches. Minor edge wear, short closed tear to top margin. A striking pictorial poster celebrating the "Pioneer Cattlemen of Victoria County," which is located on the coastal plain of Texas just inland from Matagorda Bay, due southeast from San Antonio, and northwest up the Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi. The poster prints a bit about the history of Victoria County and its cattle industry at top left, and features photographic headshots of forty prominent cattle ranchers, along with a brief biographical sketch of each person and an illustration of their brands. The border of the poster is comprised by the names and brands of additional prominent ranchers not pictured in the main body of the poster. Contrary to the title, among the forty notable ranchers celebrated here are two women - Margaret C. Wright and Margaret Hardy-Borland. The paragraph at top right also includes additional background on these two pioneering women, beginning, "No account of the ranch life of Victoria County would be complete without some reference to Margaret C. Wright and Margaret Hardy-Borland, who were outstanding among the pioneer ranchwomen of Texas." The women are pictured with their biographical sketch and brands at the far left and far right of the top row, respectively. The poster also features one Mexican-born rancher named Jose Maria Gonzales, who is noted as "upright and kindly and fondly remembered" and whose "herds were among the largest in south Texas." The map was published by Leopold Morris, with photographic reproductions by E.C. Ketler and brand drawings by Oscar A. Schulte. OCLC records just three copies of this poster, at SMU, Texas A&M Medical Library, and Utah State.
