About This Item
New York: American Jewish Historical Society, 1952. First Edition. Octavo. 199 pages, bibliography, index (Studies in American Jewish History, Number 2). A fascinating account of the first Jews to settle in Utah as the earliest Mormons used the ideas of ancient Israel referring to Zion as their homeland; in fact, the Mormons thought the Jews should have Palestine restored as their true homeland. When early Mormons not only said they were descendents of the 12 tribes but one identified which tribe it left the Jewish settles flabbergasted. There is a chapter on Jews who became Mormons. On pages 177-178 there is a list of Jews buried in the B'nai Israel Cemetery. A fascinating book not only for those interested in early Jewish history in the American West and their relationship with Mormons but for the general reader as well. Bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, light rubbing to upper joint. A very good copy.
