[9x6.75in]; x, [2], [19]-567 pp., 66 illustrations on 64 plates including frontispiece; Publishers teal pebbled cloth covers with gilt and black lettering on front and spine, black designed borders and gilt illustration of mountain men telling stories around a campfire on front, all edges trimmed, tan floral patterned end papers; Some shelf wear to edges, corners and surfaces with rubbing, corners frayed, several splits to rear joint with old repairs, soiling to rear cover. [Wagner-Camp53 306, Cowan64 p.481]. De Witt Clinton Peters (1829-1876) was an author of over 26 works of western pioneer life and know as the biographer of Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson (1809-1868). This book is a later printing from, "The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson" first published in 1858. This revised edition, by Estes and Lauriat, was a popular edition that had several printings in the 1880's.
Kit Carson was a frontiersman, trapper, soldier, and Indian agent. He participated in many of the expeditions as a guide, including both of John Fremont's expeditions in 1842 to 1844. He was with Fremont in 1846 to assist in the California Bear Flag rebellion at the start of the United States war with Mexico. Carson went on to assist the military in securing California. He returned to new Mexico to marry and become an Indian agent He also served in the the Civil war in campaigns in the Southwest and, after the war, continued his work as an agent and superintendent of Indian Affairs.
