About This Item
1883. A New 48 Page Booklet on the 13th Regiment of Michigan Volunteers. We have printed the spiral-bound booklet one-sided on 8 1/2 x 11" 60# bond paper, with the front cover protected by a vinyl sheet. The original narrative had no pictures, but we have added background information and pictures of Col. Shoemaker and Gen. Don Carlos Buell, and a few sketches from other vintage Civil War writings. The booklet is reprinted from an article that first appeared in the 1883 Report of the Pioneer Society of the State of Michigan. An excerpt from an old book on Michigan in the Civil War, giving a history of the regiment and the names of officers, has also been added. From the original article: "Compiler's Note -- In this article from the ready pen of Col. Shoemaker, we have a record not only of much personal interest, but an addition of great value to the history of the war. He takes us "behind the scenes," and shows how correct were our criticisms at the time, of the dilatory commanders whom we accused of trying "how not to do it." He takes the reader along with him; we see the dreary bivouac, we follow with the weary march, we almost hear the roar and see the rush of battle, share the indignation of his men as they saw the half-hearted attempt of Gen. Buell to put down the rebellion by acting merely on the defensive, and we admire the skill with which Col. Shoemaker sustained his command at Stevenson, and made his hasty retreat by Buell's orders ... of nearly a hundred miles over mountains to Nashville with the exultant foe at his heels." The booklet is largely a compilation of extracts from letters Col. Shoemaker sent to his wife in 1862 and is filled with details one could only hope to find in a private diary. He mentions such things as "not once (having) taken off my clothes" in ten days, the treachery of the civilians, the ineptness of his superiors, the lack of sufficient food, and urges her to tell no one but the governor what he's written concerning General Buell.. Limited Edition Reprint Leavenworth. Spiral/Comb. New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
