From the dust jacket:
Berton Roueché writes: "I've read it with enjoyment. It's really quite an unusual thriller—wonderfully muted."
When Bob Turbett got out of the cab in front of Mrs. West's, the first thing he noticed was the lawns. He was the man who would have to mow them. It was his summer job, helping out at Mrs. West's in return for room and breakfast while he was study at summer school.
The house was an angular gray monster; the woman who opened the door to his ring had eyes that blinked and roamed, and uncared-for hair, held in place randomly. She said she was Miss Summers, Mrs. West's sister. "Mrs. West doesn't feel up to seeing you right now," she said. "You're going to have the room on the top floor. Betty Clay used to have it, but she's a paying guest now, on the second floor."
Miss Summers was about to help Bob carry his things up to the top-floor room when a voice spoke into the hallway. It was a slow commanding voice. "Mr. Turbett can carry his things up himself, Claire. You are not the servant here."
Miss Summers walked off, her face expressionless.
She reappeared when the expressman brought Bob's trunk to the house. "Mrs. West doesn't allow trunks to be brought into the house," she said. "You will have to put it in the— in the—" She was having trouble with the word—"cellar."
"Wait'll you see the cellar," the expressman said as he and Bob carried the trunk toward the house. "You wouldn't believe in a ritzy place like this they'd keep a cellar lookin' like that."
Finally Bob met Mrs. West, and he didn't think it was going to manage living in that house for a whole summer.
But Betty Clay, the second-floor paying tenant, faintly cheered him.
They were to share a bathroom, Mrs. West had told him.
In time they were to share more than that, including a secret.
Howard Roman has written a full-bodied and fascinating novel with suspense—lots of suspense.
The horror behind the novel is enhanced by the reality of the people and the scenes that hide it, and the quality of the writing, which is high.
