The population was 383 at the 2010 census. As the title of the book indicates, Salem has a long history. White men replaced the native American ownership of this area of Iowa on June 1, 1833, when the Black Hawk Purchase was opened for settlement. From 1820 - 1834, Iowa was an 'orphan,' not attached to any territory or state. From 1834 - 1836, Iowa was a part of the Territory of Michigan and from 1836 - 1838, a part of the Territory of Wisconsin. Finally, in 1838 Iowa became a separate territory and in 1846 achieved statehood. In 1836, the Territory of Wisconsin legislature organized seven counties in the 'Iowa District,' west of the Mississippi River. Henry County was one of these newly organized counties. Salem has been important for its humanitarian efforts (the Underground Railroad and programs to aid the post Civil War Blacks and Indians) and certainly a business center for the southwest section of the county. From projects such as White's Institute to the R.W. Foss Electrical System, the people of Salem have a proud legacy. . Very Good. 1996. First Edition.
