About This Item

London: Michael Joseph. Very Good/Good. 1961. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket closed tears, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine and illustration on upper cover. No ownership marks. B/w plates and line-illustrations. 95 pages clean and tight. THIS book is for the Plain Man and his Handsome Wife who occasionally have a fiver or so to spare, like to poke about in second-hand shops, don't like to be dictated to by the furniture trade, can't afford a set of Hepplewhite chairs and don't care to have their home given an ironed-out, face-lifted appearance. It is mostly concerned with simple country-made pieces of the distant past and with all kinds of household goods produced during the nineteenth century. There was a great deal which was shoddy, a great deal we can laugh at; there was also quite a lot which was soundly made and which can `marry' with comfort into most unpretentious households. This book attempts to provide a chart to this largely unmapped country. .
