St. Mary Cray, Kent: Johnson, Riddle & Co. Ltd., 1965.. Original colour-printed plan of the London Underground (15 x 22.5 cm), verso printed in blue and red with index, folding twice as issued into a single pamphlet. An excellent clean copy. Paul E. Garbutt (1919-2008) was an English railroad man and transit worker active in the middle part of the 20th century. Garbutt was born in Westcliff-on-Sea. After graduating from school in 1934, he took work with the London, Scotland, and Midland Railway. After World War II, he transition to the London Underground where he is credited with redesigning the London Underground map in 1962 to conform stylistically to the conventions established by Harry Beck in 1931. He can also be credited with the distinctive bottle shape of the Circle Line.
