About This Item

London: F.C. & J. Rivington, 1805. Near fine.. Gorgeously bound 9-volume set of Shakespeare, all uniformly bound in early 19th-century full tree calf with elaborately gilt-stamped spines. This set uses the text edited by George Steevens, one of the most important commentators on the Bard and a central figure in Shakespeare's apotheosis during the Georgian era to the title of England's greatest writer. Tree calf bindings, created by chemicals applied to the surface, which are then brushed out into branches like a tree, became popular in the late 19th century; they have the effect of marbling but on leather rather than on paper. A stunning set. Nine octavo volumes, 8.25'' x 5.25'' each. Full contemporary tree calf, spines elaborately stamped in gilt with central dot pattern, red goatskin spine labels. All edges speckled red. Half titles present; volume I with engraved frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare by Neagle. Most volumes between 460 and 550 pages. Engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Some bits of spotting to boards, only light rubbing to extremities. Interior with infrequent soil, light scattered foxing. Joints firm. Bright.
