About This Item

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1953. Hardback. First edition. VG. One corner bumped. Otherwise some fading to back cover but the titling on the spine is in excellent condition. No DW. No annotations or inscriptions. 210 pages including index. Over 5.5" by 8.5". Not ex-library book. Tight, sound copy. This book is one of the most detailed and vivid expositions of the playwright's art and craft. Many examples are given both from the author's own plays and from the plays of other eminent and popular playwrights. John William van Druten (1 June 1901 – 19 December 1957) was an English playwright and theatre director, known professionally as John van Druten. He began his career in London, and later moved to America becoming a U.S. citizen. He was known for his plays consisting of witty and urbane observations of contemporary life and society. His most celebrated plays are perhaps 'I Am A Camera' and 'Bell, Book and Candle' both of which were filmed; the former adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's Berlin writings later providing the basis of the highly successful musical 'Cabaret'. .
