About This Item

LAST & MOST COMPLETE 17th CENTURY EDITION - NEW POEMS & MANY TEXTUAL CHANGES

[6], 304, 307-322, 321-336, 377-392, 353-414pp. very irregular pagination but complete but for the preliminary and final blank leaves A1 and Dd8, early nineteenth century half tan calf, smooth spine panelled by gilt fillets, dark brown morocco title label gilt, marbled sides, title page backed with plain paper apparently at an early date (or at time of binding), first few leaves lightly but evenly toned, some light spotting scattered throughout, narrow blank strip trimmed from fore-edges the 2 leaves B6 & B7 (apparently to remove a smoke mark), closed tear (no loss and with minor old repair) in C1, some light staining and minor adhesion on leaves H1-2 (the facing pages 98-99 once apparently lightly pasted together) and with a closed tear (no loss) in the latter leaf H2 repaired with archival tissue, small paper flaw in X1 causing the loss of some letters of text on its recto, some running headlines very close to the upper edge, else generally very good.
Nineteenth century armorial bookplate of Samuel Allen, inscribed on free endpaper "S. P. Denning" and "M. V. R. W/ 1939" and a light pencilled note by the last recording its purchase - "Belfast/ Tate" - on facing endpaper.

Keynes Bibliography of Donne, 84 Wing D1871 Grolier Wither to Prior, 291 ESTC r32770
This, the fifth and most complete edition published in the seventeenth century, incorporates many textual changes and adds five new poems including "To His Mistress Going to Bed" on p.97-99. Most of this poem is printed on p.98-99 and they appear to have been sometime 'censored' by being lightly pasted together - the lines beginning "Full nakedness! All joy are due to thee" being just too much for someone. This edition was issued without a portrait.ESTC notes that L5 exists in two settings with line 6, page 153 either (a) "Vice-covering" (as in this copy), or (b) "Vice-couvering".
