With a memoir by the British critic and poet F.T. Palgrave. Includes some sixty of his short and three long poems: The Bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich, Amours de Voyage, and Mari Magno, or Tales on Board. Witnessing both, the French revolution of 1848, while he was in Paris, and the siege of the Roman Republic in 1849 while in Rome, inspired two of his long poems: The Bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich and Amours de Voyage. Clough had left Oxford, and later his post at University College in London, for the same reason: the oppressive ideology. He is best known for short poetry and is experiments with English hexameters and other forms of verse based on classical models. Contains 16 pages with Macmillan and Co. list of works adapted for presents. From the combined library of English professors and scholars Gwin J. Kolb and his son Jack Kolb. Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) an English poet and teacher. He was the brother of suffragist Anne Clough, and assistant to Florence Nightingale, a cousin of his wife Blanche Shore Smith; he devoted six years to Nightingale's work as an unpaid secretarial assistant. Clough studied under Thomas Arnold at Rugby School in from 1829, and in 1852 lectured and edited Plutarch in Cambridge, Massachusetts, encourage by Ralph Waldo Emerson. He returned to London in 1853 where he was offered an examiner ship in the Education Office and was appointed secretary to a commission sent to study foreign military education.
