About This Item
Houghton Mifflin, Boston and New York, ca. 1911; 8vo, 409 pages; half leather. The poems of Ralph Waldo Emerson, edited by Edward Emerson, the poet’s brother, with his preface describing the history behind this edition. Includes the entirety of the Riverside Press edition plus additional poems and fragments. ‘The House,’ which appeared in the first volume of "Poems," and ‘Nemesis,’ ‘Una,’ ‘Love and Thought,’ and ‘Merlin’s Songs, from the "May-Day" volume, have been restored, and some of the essays to the "Elements," plus a few poems by Ellen Tucker, the poet’s first wife, have likewise been added. A few poems from the verse books, ‘Insight,’ ‘September,’ ‘October,’ ‘Hymn,’ and ‘Riches’ are printed here for the first time, as well as some twenty early unpublished pieces "not so much for their poetic merit as for the light they shed on the growth of Emerson’s thought and character." Very Good, original leather, raised bands, gilt compartments, marbled boards and end papers, top page edges gilt, frontispiece gravure portrait plate of the poet, with guard tissue. Custom engraved presentation bookplate on front pastedown for "The Thomas Hyde Scholar, 1917." Moderate external wear, spine title labels absent, page vi indelicately opened, not however affecting text on either side. Text clean, crisp, bright, binding tight and square, hinges firm and uncracked.
