About This Item
GAY, John. POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, at Shakespear's-Head in the Strand, and Bernard Lintot, between the Temple-Gates in Fleetstreet, 1720. 2 volumes. John Gay (1685-1732) was a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. Includes 2 plates by William Kent, a subscriber list, and an index. 4to., contemporary calf, spine in 6 compartments, spine gilt. Bookplate to front pastedown. Ink ownership to ffep and tp. Front board of volume 2 is detached; rear joint of volume 2 is weakening. Although a few signatures have sprung, the leaves are quite clean, with the expected amount of perimeter toning and occasional spotting. Overall, this is a good set of an exceptional collection of English poetry.
