These volumes contain 'Table Talk', 'The Progress of Error', 'Charity', 'John Gilpin', 'The Task', and more. William Cowper was a popular English poet who helped initiate the Romantic movement, with his descriptions of life in the English countryside. After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign. With four hand-coloured plates to Volume I. With six hand-coloured plates to Volume II. Illustrated by Thomas Stothard. Stothard also illustrated editions of 'Robinson Crusoe', 'The Pilgrim's Progress' and 'The Decameron'. In a signed half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light marks to the boards. Head of the spine of Volume I is lifting a little due to bumping. Small amount of loss to the spine labels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with only the occasional mark and spot. Very Good Indeed
