About This Item

Padova: nella Stamperia del Seminario, appresso Giovanni Manfrè, 1732. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (22 cm); 83, [1] pages. Woodcut initial, woodcut tailpieces and ornaments. In bronze-and-green "carta brocata," that is, paper dyed green, then masked with a fruit-and-floral pattern before being overlaid with metallic bronze, producing a brocaded effect. Some abrasions to covers. Rare, with OCLC locating no copies in North America.

A collection of verse written by members of titled Venetian families for the most part, on the occasion of receiving the ambassador to Venice, Luigi Pio of the House of Savoy, acting in the service of the Hapsburg Emperor Charles VI. Most of the contributors are more well-known for their political and commercial accomplishments than for their poetry. An exception is Gasparo Gozzi (1713-1786), the poet, essayist, and above all satirist who launched the Gazzetta Veneta, and his wife, the poet and translator Luisa Bergalli (1703-1779).

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
