London: George Bell and Sons, 1878. Finely bound set of Chaucer's poetical works. Small octavos, four volumes bound in three quarters morocco by Bayntun Bindery with gilt tooling to the spine and red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, tissue guarded frontispiece portrait of Chaucer to volume one. In near fine condition. Widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer is best known for The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer also achieved fame in his lifetime as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific A Treatise on the Astrolabe for his 10-year-old son Lewis. Among Chaucer's many other works are The Book of the Duchess, The House of Fame, The Legend of Good Women, and Troilus and Criseyde.
