New York: Hurst & Co, n.d.. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo. viii, pages 9-492 pages. Illustrations. Red decorative cloth hardcover. Floral end papers. All edges gilt. Cloth spine is faded, chipped at the head, and worn at the base. Old damp stain on the back cover. Front hinge is cracked. Rear hinge slightly cracked. Contents partly shaken with crack in the text block at page 162. Inscription written on the right front flyleaf reads "Ex Libris Eugene M. Mitchell Atlanta Ga June 27, 1931." Bookplate of Stephens Mitchell on the front paste down. Provenance from the estate of the Mitchell family in Atlanta, Georgia.

Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) was born in Atlanta in 1866 to Russell Crawford Mitchell and Deborah Margaret Sweet. He graduated from the University of Georgia law school in 1886. He was an Atlanta attorney, co-founder of the Atlanta Historical Society, and father of Stephens Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell author of Gone With the Wind. His wife was Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens.

Stephens Mitchell bookplate located on the front end sheet. Stephens Mitchell (1896-1983) was the son of Eugene Muse Mitchell and Isabel "Maybelle" (Stephens) Mitchell. He was born 1896 in Atlanta. His sister was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia and was a prominent Atlanta attorney, historian, and devout Catholic. He also edited the Atlanta Historical Bulletin. After John Marsh, husband of Margaret, died in 1952 Stephens became the executor of Margaret Mitchell's estate. Stephens Mitchell died in 1983 and the estate was passed on to his two sons Eugene Muse Mitchell II and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell.
