Inscribed by Bret Harte for "Madame Van de Velde" in December, 1884. Later the property of James Mansfield Cleary (executive with the Chicago Tribune), with his bookplate. Tipped in is a 4-page letter from editor W. M. Rossetti to fellow critic T. Watts Dunston regarding Trelawney, 1882. Moxon's Popular Poets.
