About This Item

Poetical Works, London and New York: Routledge, 1855. 16mo, first edition, pp. xxxv, 234, xl, 118, navy morocco boards with gilt lettering and decoration in 5 compartments on spine, gilt framing and decoration on both covers, all edges gilt, illustration by Birket Foster, gift inscription on free front endpaper. Foster was a painter who at the time this book was in great demand for his landscape illustrations, a few of which are presented here. Akenside, an 18th-century physician, poet and didact, achieved success but tended to confound his contemporaries (see Wikipedia). Dyer, a Welsh priest, painter and poet, is possibly best know for the poem "The Fleece," which is printed here.
