Philip Greely Brown (1885-1934) was identified with the banking and real estate business in Portland, Maine. According to the Portland Evening Express of December 19, 1934: "Despite the many responsibilities of his business associations, Mr. Brown was a genuine book lover and had acquired an exceptionally large and valuable private library. He was long a trustee and president of the Portland Public Library and its vast and valuable stock reached its present proportions in recent years to a considerable degree under his personal supervision." In October 1935, a year following Brown's death, his large library of first editions and other works was sold by American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, Inc. of New York. This book was listed among the items offered in that sale.
