Newly, expertly rebacked in black cloth with gilt lettering; original front and rear boards slightly edgeworn; lacks five leaves (70a-b, 88a-b, 247-48, 281-82, 329-30), but quality facsimiles of those leaves on appropriate vintage paper have been expertly and archivally tipped in. Tight and attractive later printing.

The Booklet and all 24 prints are in very good condition but the sleeve is very worn and has tears and scuffs along all edges. Booklet is in great condition. Comes with 24 color 9 x 12 prints of paintings by Winold Reiss. No markings on the inside of the book or on the color prints. Original buff wrappers printed in brown and orange with an image of the rising sun over a desert landscape to the upper wrapper and a cartoon of a knight pointing to the Shields farm on the lower wrapper. Illustrated throughout with photographs and maps. Partially erased price and a little light dampstain to the cover. Occasional tiny spots to contents, which are faintly toned. A clean and fresh copy in excellent condition. First edition of this charming tourist booklet promoting the Coachella Valley and Shields Date Gardens, the famous "home of the date shake" on Highway 111 in Indio, California. Date agriculture was introduced to the Coachella Valley when the US Department of Agriculture set up an experimental station in the region in 1904. Near Fine book that has very slight bumps to corners, shelf wear to edges, pages are slightly age-toned. and with soft spine ends; in a Good jacket that has chips, largest about 1 by 2 inches top corner front panel, and tears to edges, some color loss, rubbing, and with slight fading to spine. The $4.00 price on front flap has been lined through and 2.95 written in ballpoint. This copy inscribed generically – Happy Trails – and signed by Muller on a blank end page between the half-title and title pages. Muller was better known as a Western artist whose work was influenced by C. M. Russell. Muller claims to have lived with Buffalo Bill, after his father was killed in an accident, from when he was nine until he was twenty seven. The veracity of this tale has been disputed and the tale here might be considered autobiographical fiction. The book is quite scarce signed by the author, who was the illustrator.

Tanner UNIVERSAL ATLAS, the rights to which were purchased by Mitchell from Carey & Hart. The early Mitchell maps are distinguished by their vivid hand-coloring and attractive decorated borders. They are among the most sought-after ante-bellum maps published in the United States. This map is guaranteed to be authentic and more than 170 years old.
