About This Item
New York: MJF Books, 2004. First Printing, First Edition Thus. . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Macinnis, an Australian educator and television personality, presents an informative and witty history of poisons, for good or bad, in peace and war. He begins with poisoners, such as England's Dr. Crippen, who poisoned his wife, cut her up and disposed of the bits and pieces before boarding a ship for Canada with his lover but was hunted down with the aid of the new radio telegraph, arrested and hanged. Or Locusta, a cunning Roman noblewoman, who sold Nero the poison used to kill the son of Claudius. Or Abraham Lincoln, who sometimes took massive doses of 375 grams of mercury to counter depression (today 21 grams is considered safe). Boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. The dustjacket shows minimal surface and edgewear, no tears, no chipping or creasing. A macabre but fascinating read.
