About This Item

Wellington NZ: Polynesian Society, 1953. Second edition. This is the second section of the catalogue of the famous Oldman collection, highly prized for its ethnographical content. Neatly dedicated at the top of the title page "To George Neilson, with Compliments from Ken Webster ~ May '56." Including Polynesian artifacts from Tahiti, Austral and Cook Groups, the preface notes "Since the first edition of this memoir, the New Zealand Government has purchased this entire collection which has been divided among the principal museums of the country." and "It was shortly after this that the distinguished collector himself died. This volume and its companion no less than the collection itself form such a memorial as he would have wished." An essential reference for any collector of ethnographic art of the region, based on the greatest Polynesian ethnographic collection of all time. Roy. 8vo, 86pp and 136 b&w photo plates. From the Memoirs of the Polynesian Society, Vol. 15. Handsomely rebound in cream cloth w/ tan leather spine, gilt title, vgc. Very rare.
