About This Item

Good complete copy of an unusual illustrated souvenir of Pompeii

Unlike other records of Pompeii which focused on the wall paintings and mosaics as they were excavated, this book features "then and now" illustrations.

Full-colour reconstructions of Roman life in the villas, shops, baths, streets, theaters, temples and circuses peopled with first-century figures, as well as tinted views of the ruins as they were in 1898.

With 21 fine chromolithographs of ordinary life in ancient Pompeii (I-XXI) and 11 tinted lithographs of the ruins (A-L).

Lithographed by D. Capri, Friedrich, et al after illustrations by G. Discanno, G. Autoriello, G. Cel, Oscar Dressler, A. Magliano, de Simone, S. de Stefani, V. Mollame and A. Carelli.

Antonio was grandson of the architect and scenic designer Antonio Niccolini Sr. (1772-1850). Antonio Jr. also published the final two volumes of Fausto and Felice Niccolini's monumental book on the interior design of Pompeii, Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei, (Houses and monuments of Pompeii), Naples, 1854-1897, after the brothers' death in 1886.

Bookplate of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, "presented by Nita Butler."

Cloth boards with crude buckram spine, gitl title on front board, stained and bumped at edges. Ex library copy of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh with stamps and markings to title page and index, but plates unstamped. Some chipping to edges of pages, tears to tissue guards, with various degrees of foxing.
