About This Item

New York: Rariora Press. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued. 1930. 0 To Be Determined. First Edition. First, Limited Edition (No. 847 of only 1000 copies). Publisher's full blue buckram, gilt lettering on spine and cover, all edges deckle. Illustrated with full-page woodcuts and head and tail-pieces by Alexander Couard. This limited printing comprised the entire edition of Caldwell's second book; there was no trade edition. Published in 1930, Poor Fool was Erskine Caldwell's second novel. Like most of his fiction, it revolves around a gallery of grotesque characters motivated by the basest urges. The novel's central figure is Blondy Niles, a down-and-out boxer who exists at the very fringes of society. The garish nighttime world of bars and prostitutes, con men and petty crimes is the milieu in which he moves. When he is approached by Salty Banks to be an unwitting fall guy in a rigged boxing scheme, a calamitous chain of events is set in motion, and death is the inevitable result.. Spine sunned and the gilt on the spine faded, some pages opened unevenly, else fine; unmarked, tight, square, and clean. VERY GOOD. . Woodcuts. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. 188, (1) pp .
