First edition 1st printing, Very Good book with light rubbing and wear bottom edges, some very slight spots front board, bit of fade along top edges, previous owner name on front end page and small number 75 in ballpoint on rear paste-down; in a Very Good first state jacket with rubbing and some color loss to black portions, wear and small chips at spine ends and corners, small closed tears at top of spine, couple of light overwrite impressions. Signed and inscribed – To Felix, with a dry pen, John. The author has also marked a line through the text on the front flap and written "not true." This was Updike's first novel.

Synopsis

John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, in 1932. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in Oxford, England, at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of The New Yorker . His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Rosenthal Foundation Award, and the William Dean Howells Medal. In 2007 he received the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John Updike died in January 2009.
