About This Item

Scarecrow Press, Metuchen, N.J. first edition, 1993. Cloth, gilt cover-title on contrasting panel, 8vo, 22 cm,. xxx, 559 pp. This book "is a record of 19th- and 20th-century (1850's - 1991) English-language books containing movable illustrations. Included are 1,600 titles in which an action by the reader produces motion in the illustration. These are books with three-dimensional or pop-up pictures, and books with moving parts within the illustrations such as tab-operated mechanicals and transformational plates. The titles were gathered from many sources: private collections; printed catalogs such as the Books in print (BIP), National union catalog (NUC), Publishers trade list annual (PTLA), Cumulative book index; and the online databases OCLC and RLIN... The primary arrangement of the book is alphabetical by title. Each entry includes as much information as could be verified: title, author, paper engineer, illustrator, series, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and a description. Many titles published since the 1960's have been manufactured by production companies. When known, the name of the production company and the place of publication have also been included. The books are also indexed by personal names, series title, and publication date...The description includes the size, the number of pages, a brief description of the text, and a list of the movable illustrations." - from the introduction. Very Good.
