About This Item
Portrait of an African American 25th Infantry sharpshooter. 3 3/8 x 4 7/8 in. Silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount. Circa early 20th century. Verso bears several indecipherable pencil inscriptions. The featured African American sergeant wears a sharpshooter badge, in the shape of the cross on his chest, along with an infantry device and insignia on his cap indicating Company K, 25th infantry regiment. The 25th served from 1866 to 1957, and was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" units, seeing action in the American Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War and World War II. Based on his uniform, this sharpshooter had his photo taken after 1902 and before America's entry into WW.I. The sharpshooter badge on his uniform is second highest marksmanship award that can be granted to a soldier, requiring very high accuracy during their examination. Although these badges are awarded to both officers and enlisted soldiers alike, as a matter of U.S. Army tradition, only non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers are expected to wear these badges on their service uniforms in most units. Spotting to image and mount, slight wear to mount. In good condition overall. An exceptional example of a talented Buffalo Soldier in the early 20th century.
