About This Item
Paris: Gallimard, 1944. Hardback. No DW. Bumped and stained at top of the spine. Otherwise VG condition. No inscriptions or annotations. 322 pages. This compact collection of the poetry of Paul Valéry (1871-1945) was published the year befor he died. It contains all his most famous poems including "La Jeune Parque"; "Le Cimetière marin" and "L'Ébauche d'un serpent," His entry in Wikipedia under the heading La Jeune Parque has the following lines: "This obscure, but sublimely musical, masterpiece, of 512 alexandrine lines in rhyming couplets, had taken him four years to complete, and it immediately secured his fame. With "Le Cimetière marin" and "L'Ébauche d'un serpent," it is often considered one of the greatest French poems of the twentieth century." tt is to his great credit that during World War II he did not collaborate with the Nazis. The Vichy regime stripped him of some of his prestigious posts. Under the German occupation, Valéry nevertheless continued, throughout these troubled years, to publish and to be active in French cultural life, especially as a member of the Académie française. .
