About This Item

[Trenton, NJ]: (Thomas Maddock's Sons Company), 1910. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Pp. 224. Limited edition: Number 1,236 of an unknown limitation. Color frontis., with tissue guard, showing a firing kiln. Illustrated throughout with great illustrations typical of the period. Photo portrait, with tissue guard, of Thomas Maddock. Includes a lengthy and seemingly comprehensive roster of maker's marks, international and domestic, organized by region. Bound in green linen with black rule and gilt lettering on front cover. Title page is starting, and nearly separated, which is indicative of a manufacturing glitch. An excellent history of pottery, with a special emphasis on plumbing or, ahem, more politely, "sanitary pottery." The color plate depicting "The Modern Bathroom" is the very height of bathroom design and style -- a timeless aesthetic, all chrome and porcelain. The venerable firm that became Maddock's Sons was acquired by American Standard in 1929. Now covered in a clear, removable, archival jacket.
