About This Item

1683 1ed James Ussher Power of Kings vs Church Ireland Charles II England RARE

"What is it which all men especially desire? Eternal life and happiness?" ¬

– James Ussher

James Ussher was an early 17th-century Archbishop in the Church of Ireland who is most remembered for giving an exact date to the beginning of creation. His full body of work includes letters, sermons, dissertations, and exegesis but this work focuses solely on improving the Christians life and strengthening their faith.

One of Ussher's lesser-known books was his 'Power Communicated by God to the Prince. This work, which was dedicated to Charles II of England, seeks to answer the question 'Where does a magistrates power come from - from Heaven or from Men?'. Ussher notes the church's inherent power over ecclesiastical governments, but also the conflicts that come from a power struggle between church and external governments.

This first 1683 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It was one of the important Ussher treatises that wasn't published until after his death in 1656.
