New York: Random House, 1945. First Edition, First Printing. Near fine/Very good. Small 8vo, 7 1/4 x 5 inches (183 x 126 mm); 128 pp. Blue-grey cloth binding with violet and cream printing on front cover and spine. Top edge stained grey-violet. Dust jacket with price ($2.00) intact on front flap and small signs of wear on corners and dj edges. Owner's name in pencil on f.e.p., R.C. Bald. Prater Violet (1945) is Christopher Isherwood's fictional first person account of film-making. The title refers to Vienna's large amusement park. Isherwood broke onto the literary scene as a novelist but he eventually worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter. In this novel, Isherwood comments on life, art, commercialization of art and Nazism.
The publication page declares that "This is a wartime book" and that it complies to the Government's guidelines about saving materials.
From the estate of Robert Cecil Bald (1901 - 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who moved to the US to teach at Cornell University in 1937 and was then a professor at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965.
